Yah!!! When in doubt, call them at HG. Technology only seems to work to a point, then an old school phone call saves the day. Does anyone other than me think that technology acts counterproductive to our human need to talk directly to someone? My biggest pet peeve is drive throughs. Most companies bust their butts to serve the lazy customer who can't bothe to get off his ass to come in to their place of business and ignores those that do. Perplexed by that one.

I was recently at the brouwers cafe which rated the highest beer bar on ratebeer - underwhelming but the lamb burger was good. worth a trip if you are close to downtown seattle

Big Time, Elysian & Pike in Seattle. I've also heard that Freemont is good, but it opened since my last visit. If you get near Mt. Hood then visit Walking Man. Visit Silver City (Silverdale) if you get across the Sound or if you go up the 5, then stop at the Fishbowl (home of Fish Tale Ale) in Olympia. Also look for Diamond Knot IPA on draught. Enjoy the beer & the scenery!

I have the RSG-100ATC refractometer. It has both brix and sg scale and is auto temperature correcting. Problem is that it gives a lower reading than my hydrometer. Examples:

kolsch 1.051 refrac, 1.054 on the hydro
Brown Ale 1.051 refrac, 1.057 hydro
RyePA 1.072 refrac, 1.080 hydro

Seems like higher gravities and darker beers may have an affect. Any one have similar issues or is my refractometer a dud?

I have no idea what I'm saying. Just trying to get my post count up.

Think I just found the source of some of my error. This is from the MoreBeer website. May be additional information since I bought mine. By the way, it's an MT700 on their website.

Getting Geeky about Specific Gravity Vrs. Brix
The inaccuracy in the Specific Gravity(SG) scale on this model is rooted in the non-linear conversion of Brix to SG. Take a Brix reading of 10, multiply by 4, and you get a SG reading of 1.040 - the accurate SG reading is 1.041. Take a Brix reading of 20, multiply by 4, and you get 1.080 - the accurate conversion is 1.084. When multiplying by 4 the conversion is worse as sugar levels rise. When this (and other recent)refractometers were made they used the same linear, multiply by 4, approach to create the Specific Gravity scale. Can they fix this - absolutely. We have initiated this change and we expect models with accurate Specific Gravity scales to be available by 2011 and you can be assured MoreBeer! will be the first to carry them.

I have no idea what I'm saying. Just trying to get my post count up.

Hmmm....Interesting! Do you suppose MoreBeer will exchange the faulty logic version with a new one? I bet not!

Life is too short to drink cheap beer.

I'm not convinced the ATC part of these works well , I think you need to be pretty cool to get a good reading. If there's still an offset at ambient use the adjustment screw to bring it in line with the hydro. I've not noticed a different offset with pale or dark beer. I only use mine to make sure I'm in the ballpark pre and during boil
